The Next New Thing

 Alibaba's Taobao announced they will using virtual reality technology to make a new way to shop online in China. I think it is a "new media" coming soon. Consumers can wear special goggles to break time and space contstraints to casually stroll around the mall in the world. They can try all kinds of goods by using VR technology to restore the real scene when they shopping. For example, when you are at home, after wearing special goggles to enter Taobao website, you can choose to go to New York's fifth Avenue or you can choose the British retro market. Additionally, when consumers choose a sofa in a virtual environment, but you can see directly sofa at home, and look at the size of the color is appropriate.When I hear this announcement, I felt unbelievable. However, I believe the stronger technology, the more newly media coming.

Wiki so far

I have not do my contributes on Wiki yet. I am plannig to do research the topic of Psychology, because I am interested in what people think through their deep thoughts. And I will edit classmates' contributes pages  what I like too. After I finish my research, I will post the some interesting Youtube Video and some stories.

P2P file sharing

File Sharing is that users can sharing computer data and information through network no matter in public or private. File sharing allows people to use same files that can be able to read or edit it. 

P2P file sharing is peer to peer file sharing which can access media files like book, movie through by third party or software programs. There are many examples of P2P file sharing, such as Tribler, BitTorrent.. For example, in the article" Peers find less pressure borrowing from each other". Google is teaming up with the nation's largest peer-to-peer lender. 

Privacy & Confidentiality

Social new media make teenagers’ ability to communicate with people in real life deteriorated. At the same time, they expose teenagers’ privacy. For example, data show Facebook's privacy options put teenagers at risk. According to the radio podcast at Sophos, ninety three percent of Facebook users prefer its privacy options to be opt-in rather than opt-out. Forty six percent of the users accepted strangers’ friend requests. Eight nine percent of the users in their twenties posted their full birthday. Almost a hundred percent of the users posted their email addresses. Those kinds of settings put Facebook users in a position that will easily expose their identities. Anyone can easily be friends with others via Facebook and know them more by the information posted on Facebook. The information sharing in social networking is all public. In a class project at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2009, “Carter Jernigan and Behram Mistree analyzed more than 4,000 Facebook profiles of students, including links to friends who said they were gay. The pair was able to predict, with 78 percent accuracy, whether a profile belonged to a gay male” (Lohr P. A1). With this powerful data mining, there is no privacy on social networking sites. Once teenagers’ privacy is at risk, their safety is at risk as well. Offenders can easily use this technique to get closer to teenage users, and the teenagers’ safety is in danger because of the exposed information on social networking sites.

Advice to Baruch College

 Now, most of teachers and students at Baruch College use Blackboard and student email to communicate with each others. So firstly I recommend that improving using Twitter account. Because   I learn more about the useful of Twitter from this class, and Twitter is a great platform for collaborate and communicate thoughts and idea with each other. Another new media I want to improve is using mobile application to access the Baruch events and include the any action tools about Baruch and CUNY first. I think it is more convenient for students.

Creativity and New Media

New media foster creativity and make virtual world for persons. It is my fist time to touch virtual world, and I use second life to build a scape I really want to be. The following picture is my favorite looks and flying in the flowers. Entering in second life, I have to choose a character and a destination I really want to but in real life I couldn't. Through new media's creativity, many things would be real in the mind.

Creavitity

New media provides a great platform to improve people imagination and creativity. New media foster creativity and help business to build their beneficial strategy. In the article, "Twitter Serves Up Ideas From Its Followers", it states that companies use Twitter to get their customers feedback. Companies can improve their weakness and keep their strengths so that build higher profit. As we can see, new media foster creativity and not limit people thoughts. And make impossible ideas become real change.

Social Networking Sites

The four social networking sites I used are Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and Instagram. My impression of theses four social networking sites following :

Facebook - I am immigrator from China, the Facebook is the first social media I used in America. Facebook is a general social media which can find friends, and share photos, life stories among friends and relatives. And, it has a timeline so that we can catch up events we want to be.

Twitter - I just signed up Twitter and found the Twitter has limited characters allowed each post. It is easy to share information and thoughts when someone post. It is platform to discuss and announce among friends and classmates.

Google + -  Google not only givers the user social networking site, but also it brings people together within the context of many of Google's services. It is quite simply too.

Instagram - From my impression, Instagram is a social sites can post lots pictures and share photos album with friends. One most of interesting for me is Instagram doesn't share as much information as Facebook if we are not friends.

Social Networking has expanding across the global by the individuals used for make business and connect the interesting people. The social media can bring people together because they have same things interested in .As most popular sites like Facebook, Twitter which provide a great platform to make friends and share information and thoughts. According to the article, Social Networking Technology Boosts Job Recruiting, " But what really makes LinkedIn helpful us that it allows users to share their online Rolodexes...With LinkedIn, he can find people faster using a vastly increased network of contacts.", it shows that LinkedIn is professional social networking site which helps people to find jobs and also provides employer to find their employees they want. However, these social media also have a "dark side" which harm to some people due to loss of privacy. For example, as article "Facebook Privacy Is So Confusing Even the Zuckerberg Family Photo Isn't Private." describes Randi Zuckerberg posted a family photo on her Facebook and it set by privacy, but found her picture posted on twitter by others. As we can see, this is a big problem for loss of privacy by social networking.So far, social networking sites have no way to verify who is real you are. Because when we sign up for Facebook or Twitter, we can just write any name we want. In conclusion, if you are afraid of that your private information or photos would be stole by strangers, you don't post them in public.

   Today, networking communication is very important skill to build a successful person. The Blog and Wiki is published to the web, and both collaborate with a group. According to Professor Kathy E. Gill at University of Washington, she said " Blogging can empower a new group of writers to challenge a storyline presented by mainstream media. It can empower them to move from observer statues to commentator or even shaper of events." This shows that Blog helps us get discovered via social media. Also in "Brooklyn Blog Helps Lead to Drug Raid", it said that the criminals are arrested in the Brooklyn neighborhood because the users sharing information in blog about event happened in neighborhood. Wiki, which similar to Blog are posting thoughts, onion and ideas. However, Wiki is focusing on group projects, the content produced and collaborative writing and editing. 

social networking- a serious problem for teenagers

      As the emerging of social networking sites, people are having a more colorful life, especially for teenagers. They have a new place to express their creative thoughts, and a new forum to explore their interests. in addition, social networking sites provide teenagers a stage to make more friends. however, even though social networks enrich the lives of teenagers, they also bring several bad effects. Cyberbullying, a way to willfully and repeatedly harm others through phones and computers, is becoming more and more common among teenagers.
